There’s a lot that goes into planning a dream wedding, from destination to florals and of course, the dress. That’s why an engagement party is the time to let yourself have fun before diving deep into planning. But, what does one actually wear when it comes to an engagement event? The good news is, there really are no rules, which is why it can be both the most exciting — yet tricky — ones to navigate.
As wedding season officially kicks off, we asked celebrity stylist Paul Versace, better known as Styled By Bloom, for a few tips and tricks on how to decide on the perfect engagement party dress for you. Which comes at the perfect time too, considering the stylist just launched his collaboration with Australian favourite Runaway The Label, which has looks designed with all kinds of brides in mind.
“I drew inspiration when designing these styles from that cool, effortless chic bride,” says Versace, adding “I think we’ll be seeing lots of bows this upcoming spring/summer, especially for brides-to-be. You can also expect to see lots of monochromatic colour blocking.”
Whether you’re after a mini dress with bow detailings or something else a little unexpected, Versace says his collection put a lot of “focus on the fit and fabric of each piece”, as well as finishing off each one with a unique, and “elevated” signature detailing.
Just because it’s an engagement party, doesn’t mean you have to choose a white gown either, says Versace. If you’re someone who is looking for something colourful or bold, there are still plenty of options — think daring silhouettes with statement-making prints.
Now you’ve got the dress, Versace says to be careful of “over styling” your look. “Using too many accessories can make the look overwhelming and takes away focus from the bride-to-be. I think it’s important to not allow the pressure and excitement of being the bride to take over when styling an engagement or bridal shower look. Less is more!”
To finish it off, he adds: “Tie your engagement look together with the perfect pair of earrings and heels. If the dress is on the simpler side I’d opt for a shoe with a little more detail.”
